The Abuja Declaration on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and other related infectious diseases is the result of a Special Summit attended by the Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) from 26-27 April 2001. The Summit was devoted specifically to address the exceptional challenges of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Other Related Infectious Diseases, at the invitation of H.E. President Olusegun Obasanjo of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and in accordance with the agreement reached at the Thirty-Sixth Ordinary Session of our Assembly in Lomé, Togo from 10 to 12 July 2000.

The 2003 Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government Summit on HIV/AIDS was held in Maseru, Lesotho on 4 July 2003, chaired by His Excellency, Eng. Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, President of the Republic of Angola, issued this Declaration on HIV/AIDS in SADC.
